Localization and marketing

Selling in Brazil runs in Portuguese by law on the packaging, and by practice everywhere else. Translation alone does not clear either bar; this is what does.

Who this is for

A foreign brand ready to sell in Brazil that needs its packaging, site and launch materials in Portuguese, done to the standard the regulator requires and the standard a Brazilian buyer expects, not a literal translation of the export-market copy.

The problem this solves

Two different bars apply at once. The legal one is narrow and strict: RDC 81/2008 prohibits releasing an imported product for consumption if it is labelled in a foreign language, and a category-specific act then sets out what the label has to say and in what order: RDC 727/2022 for packaged food, covered on product labelling, or RDC 752/2022 for cosmetics, personal-care products and perfumes. The market one is broader and less forgiving of shortcuts: copy that reads as machine-translated, or a claim that works in one market but trips ANVISA's rules on another, costs credibility with the buyer even where it clears the legal bar. Getting both right at once needs someone working from the regulatory text and the market at the same time, not a translation agency handed a PDF.

What we do

  1. Localize packaging and label copy to RDC 81/2008 and the product-specific labelling rules for your category.
  2. Localize site and marketing copy into Portuguese, checked against ANVISA claim rules where the product category has them.
  3. Prepare marketplace listing copy where a marketplace launch is part of the engagement, checked against that platform's content rules.
  4. Coordinate a marketing partner for ongoing paid campaigns where the engagement calls for one.

Deliverables

Localized label and packaging copy checked for compliance, localized site or listing copy, and, where relevant, an introduction to a marketing partner for campaign execution.

What we need from you

The product, current packaging and marketing copy, and which channels (own site, marketplace, retail packaging) need localizing.

Price

From USD 1,000 as an individual service, or included in the full-cycle package; see pricing. A marketing partner's own campaign fees, where used, are quoted separately and shown as a separate line.

Who does the work

Our desk in Rio de Janeiro runs the localization and checks it against the regulatory text; a marketing partner, named in the proposal, runs paid campaigns where that is part of the scope.

Frequently asked questions

Is Portuguese labelling actually mandatory, or just recommended?

Mandatory. RDC 81/2008 prohibits releasing imported products for consumption if they are identified or labelled in a foreign language, with no exemption or transitional allowance for a different language. See product labelling for what the label itself has to state and in what order.

Is this just translation?

No, and treating it as translation is where launches go wrong. Product names, claims and marketing copy that work in English or another market can trip ANVISA's rules on cosmetics and food claims, or simply read as machine-translated to a Brazilian buyer. We localize against both the regulatory text requirements and the market's actual voice.

Do you run paid marketing campaigns?

We set up the Portuguese-language foundation, site copy, product listings and launch materials, and coordinate a marketing partner for ongoing paid campaigns where that is part of the engagement. Running the campaigns themselves sits with that partner, named in the proposal rather than assumed here.

Does this cover the marketplace listing copy too?

Yes, where a marketplace launch is part of the engagement; the listing copy is localized to the same standard as the label and the site, and checked against the specific marketplace's own content rules.
